And We're Off...

Well finally its the big day. We leave the long suffering sisters house this afternoon for a leisurely drive to Dover, to catch an early morning ferry to Calais.

We are full of very mixed feelings today, as we said goodbye to our daughter Kerri yesterday, and it was all very emotional.

We are going to miss many things, and a few very special people, you know who you are!

Watch this space for continuing news of our trip.

Don't forget to leave loads of comments, we love to read them, and it makes us feel still connected.

News Flash...

24th June 2008

HALLELUJAH!!!

At last it seems most, if not all, of the money matters holding us back have been sorted.

Today we booked Ourselves and Elvis on the ferry from Dover - Calais on Tuesday 1st July for only £37.50 RESULT! So its one more week in Blighty, then on the road at last. We are both in a highly confused state of excitement about the trip, and deep sadness at leaving Friends and Family behind. Oh well, Crete is only a 4 hour flight...

Cheddar - More than just cheese...

15th - 17th June 2008.

So, here we are still waiting to cut the red tape holding us back, what shall we do? Lets go to Cheddar we cry, so its load up the fridge in Elvis and off we set.

When we arrive at the Gorge we drive up and down for a while, marvelling at the view, then park up and head for the tourist info, to get a reccomendation for a campsite. They sent us here http://www.cheddarbridge.co.uk/ which was a result, as its a lovely site. We duly arrive at site park up, and do our usual evening routine of eating and drinking.

Next day, (monday) we meet up with Roy and Julia, (Lisas Parents) and off we go to spend the day looking at caves, cheese and public houses.

The caves are awe inspiring, and the cheeses and public houses are also mighty fine.

On Tuesday the weather is nice enough to tempt us to actually unload the bikes off the rack. Armed with ham sarnies and plenty of fluids (red wine) we set off to find the reservoir, which is only a couple of miles up the road. A couple of hours and "several" miles later we arrive back at Elvis having missed the reservoir completely somehow, proud of our athletic prowess, if rather sore about the "nether" regions.

All in all we had a fun 3 days and would recommend both the camp site and cheddar itself to anyone.

Yawn...

Grrrr... we are still waiting to get away, and are both slowly losing the will to live. The seemingly never ending tying up of loose ends has now delayed us for about six weeks...sigh.

On the Bright side, we think we are on the last leg, and fully expect to leave by the end of the month at the very latest, all fingers and toes crossed.

Still waiting to go...

So, Elvis is loaded, cleaned, fueled and raring to go, as are we. The only fly in the ointment is the interminable drudgery of financial matters arising from the sale of the house, and changing bank accounts so we are not charged for using a card abroad, etc.

The wait is killing us.

And its probably killing the long suffering sister, Carrie, whos front room is our temporary house. She is far too nice to say, but I think she is looking forward to our departure as well.

Yorkshire

21st may 2008

Crossed the Pennines and arrived at Scotch Corner to see Chris (our son) Pass Off from his bugle course. Visited Darlington and found some quaint little shops selling cheese, wine and many things made in Yorkshire. Met Rob (nephew) from the trainstation and stocked up with steak for a BBQ. Arranged to meet Chris and watch the Champions League Final whilst eating steak. Mmmmmm STEAK!

Suited and Booted we sat and watched the parade. Impressive.

With all four of us on board we trundled our way (the wrong way) back to Bristol and missed all the traffic on the M5 (we were on the A1) well it said South on the sign!

Time to fork out for a SatNav we think.

The Lake District

19th may 2008

Set off early to visit the Lake District and sample some Northern fare. `Elvis` runs like a dream and handles the steep hills with ease. What a diamond we have found! Keswick was a bit too commercialised so we headed for Winlatter Pass and over to Crummock Water. The campsite is perfect, quiet and remote,(one shop sells all! if its open!) Still worth the walk. Visited Buttermere and found it a bit tricky with too many cars and coaches to pass on single track roads. Next time we will park up and use bikes.

Buying "Elvis the Elddis"

May 10th 2008

So after much looking into types, makes, sizes etc on all websites we could find, and reading m
otorhome magazines cover to cover for months, we spotted an advert in a local paper, and went off and bought "Elvis" as soon as we saw him. And we swore we would NOT buy the first one we viewed...oh well... we love him now.
